Expression Seminar
Pretty much spent the whole day drawing at Karl Gnass Expression Seminar in Burbank. For anyone that’s not familiar with Karl Gnass: the guy is a phenomenal figure drawing instructor who ranks up there with Steve Huston & Glenn Vilppu. Definitely a guy whose brain is worth picking.
But enough hero worship and back to actual blogging. The seminar is a must for anyone who is serious about character design, animation and storyboarding. Karl shares his knowledge about expression and how it’s governed by physical and/or emotional actions. He also brings up the point that you can get a sense of what a character’s face would look like based on the gesture/spirit of the pose.
For me, the seminar was like being in Mark McDonnell’s Clothed Figure Gesture Drawing class because the focus is on capturing who the character is and just what you see. Although, I’m still trying to figure out what Mark was trying to hammer in my head but I think I’m kinda getting there. One thing totally new to me in this seminar was the fact that we got to draw two characters interacting with each other. More stuff to worry about when drawing, but fun nonetheless.
So let me know what you think about my drawings and catch you later.

Great drawings! Very strong silhouettes. I’m signed up for Karl’s “Figure Drawing Top to Bottom” class at the Guild next month and I’m really looking forward to learning from him.
