exploring ideas

So I was working on collage pages of my designs for my visual development class at SMC and decided it would be a good idea to post it on the blog. A lot of it is quick sketches and doodles while trying to find the look and feel of the characters for my story. At first I was designing generic tweety type birds because I hadn’t decided on which bird to base my story on.
So after looking through some bird field guide books, I thought the bluejay was the suitable candidate since I could play around with the hair/crown. Once I thought I had the characters decided, I tried quick renders, but I still went back to the drawing board to work out the design some more until I found something that I graviated towards.
From the results of my illustrator studies from earliers posts, I think I’m getting there. Hopefully, I’ll post a illustrator render of the adult bird. Until then, cheers.

these totally rock carl! i am diggin’ the jays (esp the differences in the heads on the bottom page, the 2nd & 3rd from the bottom left) it’d be really cool to see the shapes pushed even further!
