So last night I was out in downtown Burbank with some members of my sketchgroup and we pretty much spent the time hopping from place to place drawing. For me, it’s hard as hell to do any drawing at home because I get easily sidetracked by the internet and television. So I find these outings to be very beneficial to my artistic growth since I am actually spending time drawing.
Anyways, these drawings were done as I was at the movie theater waiting for everyone to show up. People sketching has been something I’ve been trying to improve on as of late. It’s a whole lot harder than it sounds and is a bit of a learning process. It’s forcing me to design on the fly and is really building up my shape vocabulary because of all the different people I’ve been drawing. If any of you guys have some tips for people sketching, please share. Until then, cheers.
Decided to spend my weekend sketching and trying to design characters from life, albeit that it was homework for David Colman’s character design class at the Concept Design Academy but it was a skill I wanted to build up as a designer. I was at a coffee shop on friday and the zoo on saturday: got a bit of drawing done but not the results that I wanted. To be able to design characters from quick observation is super hard and I found myself trying to capture a likeness more than anything else. It’s challenging, but I think it’ll pay off in the long run. Anyways, enjoy the rest of the weekend. cheers.
Today, I was at the Glendale Galleria sketching with some friends at the food court. I thought it would be a good idea to use the sketch session to prepare for David Colman’s Character Design Class at the Concept Design Academy. Anyways, I thought it was an okay drawing session. I didn’t get where I wanted with the designs, but I thought my memory sketches were more successful since I has a mental image in my head of who the character was as opposed to looking back at the people sitting down. I felt I was trying to get a likeness with a majority of the drawings as opposed to capturing the character. So here are the results of the session.

So last night, a couple of buddies and I decided to meet up in Studio city for some coffee shop drawing. I realized that I get more drawing done when I’m not at home and plagued with distractions. Also, being cooped up in a room all day can drive you crazy.
I got to the coffee shop about an hour earlier than everyone else since I have to account for my awful sense of direction. So I spent the time waiting by drawing some of the people around.

Finally, my friends showed up and got our drawing session started. I’ve been experimenting more with my quirky designs since it generates more of a response than my human characters. I was experimenting with different shapes and sizes while trying to keep it within the same style.

After a while, some of my drawings started to turn to rubbish as I was hitting a design wall. So my buddy, Danny, suggested a more creative exercise in drawing: where you make random scribbles with a 30% tone marker and see what you can make from it and just draw. So here are some results of the exercise.

After that, I felt back in the zone and started working on a penguin design for a photographer friend of mine. Didn’t get much done after that as we got kicked out of the coffee shop because it was closing. But overall, the night was a success as I got a lot of drawing done.

So for the 3-4 people that read this: let me know what you guys think and until then. Cheers.

I forgot how much fun people sketching can be. I haven’t been doing much of it lately just for the fact that I haven set aside some time to do so. However, I was able to get some drawing in because my vis dev class had some crits/story presentations today. Basically, this is just a compilation of sketches I mustered up during tonight’s class. I played with exaggeration a bit. Some of it successful and some not. Anyways, it’s something I need to incorporate more often in my drawing regimen. Hope you enjoy. Cheers.
