John Tucker as Count Dracula: 5-15 Minute poses

I decided to go back to using prismacolor markers for Thursday’s Drawing Club and it almost felt foreign to me.  I think it’s because I also utilized a ballpoint pen to gesture in my line and a brush pen to “lock down” the drawing.  I saw Eric Canete use a brush pen at his workshop demo this past Sunday and thought it would be cool to try it out in figure drawing.

Not the best of ideas.  Eric used the brush pen to establish thick and thin lines in his finish: I used it to make marks, haha.  Anyways, it’s always fun to draw John Tucker as he’s very expressive and just has fun with it.  The reason I gave Dracula a pompadour was because, earlier in the week, I saw a sketch that my teacher Mark McDonnell did of a vampire Elvis.  Gotta give credit to where credit is due.

On a sidenote, Mark McDonnell’s Clothed Figure Quick Sketch class at LAAFA starts tomorrow.

Anyways, hope you guys enjoy the drawrings.  Cheers!

Vilppu Figure Drawing Class 03

vilppu_week03_01
5 min poses – to start out the session

vilppu_week03_02
longer ones (anywhere from 10min – 1hour)

vilppu_week03_03
3 min poses – to end the day

So it’s class 3 of my figure drawing experience with Glenn Vilppu and I’m still trying to figure it out as I go.  My mind just went on autopilot this session and line consistency amongst other things went out the window.  Haha.

On a side note, first time drawing an elderly lady for figure drawing .  I have no clue what that has to do in regards to the results of my drawings, but it was noteworthy enough to point out.  Cheers!

internship, workshops, and housewarmings oh my

I didn’t do any of the homework that I planned on doing this weekend, but I got a bit of drawing in.  Success?  Anyways.  Here’s the weekend sketch duh-dump

THURSDAY & FRIDAY

September 24-25, 2009

TIME: LUNCH
LOCATION: TITMOUSE INC. (Internship)

SYNOPSIS:

For those that follow the blog, I usually spend my lunchbreak scribbling in my sketchbook.  I sit in front of a screen all day and just felt the need to draw on paper whenever I get the chance.  Sometimes I do creative drawing, but for the most part: I sketch whoever happens to be sitting at the table eating their lunch.

So if some of the faces look familiar from previous posts: it’s the same person that you think it is.  Whether or not I did a good job capturing them on paper: i dunno.

SATURDAY

September 26, 2009

TIME: 930PM-3AM?
LOCATION: COSTA MESA, CA (Will Ha’s Housewarming Party)

SYNOPSIS:

This weekend I was in the Irvine area because of a The Concept Design Academy’s 2 day summer workshop at the Laguna College of Art and Design.  It was a workshop that I couldn’t miss: so many talented artists doing lectures/demo as well as the talented artists that were there to learn.  It was an all day workshop, that lasted from 10am-5pm all weekend.  So I was dead tired and planned on staying in that night.

Unfortunately, it was also my college roomate’s housewarming party the next city over.  So I’m lying in bed and got a text asking if I was still going.  Long story short: I crawl out of bed and drive over to Costa Mesa to see people I haven’t seen in a few years.

I brought along my sketchbook because: (A.) I’m a natural wallflower (B.) Thought it would be a good opportunity to draw people. (C.) I carry it around with me all the time.  1 beer turned into 6 or 7, and here are the results.

SUNDAY

September 27, 2009

TIME: 10AM-5PM
LOCATION: LAGUNA COLLEGE OF ART AND DESIGN (2 Day Concept Design Academy Workshop)

SYNOPSIS:

Dead tired at the start of the workshop because of the lack of sleep I got the night before.  Good thing that the lecturers were great speakers.  Got to meet some of the students that go Laguna College of Art and Design and felt like they have a good community of artists in that school.  Anyways, got a mix of creative and people sketching done during Sunday’s workshop.  I think that helped me get through the day since I wasn’t the most energetic person that morning.

Drawing Club: The Grim Reaper

Just got back from the Drawing Club.   I decided to try out some stuff with graphite, sanguine, a drawing stump since I’ve been seeing Glenn Vilppu do demonstrations with it in his figure drawing class for the past 2 weeks.  I’m still trying to figure the technique out as a I go but I think I did an admirable job.

Peggy Moore came in dressed as the Grim Reaper tonight and it was fun drawing her because she got into character.  The only drawback to the night was that it was really stuffy in the room.  And if you know me, I sweat like crazy and had to be weary of which paper towel I used to wipe my head and which one I used to smear the graphite.

Anyways, I labeled the pages this time (only because I wanted to try out this photoshop brush I made of my signature).  So let me know what you guys think.  Cheers

Vilppu Figure Drawing Class 02

5 hour figure drawing class with Glenn Vilppu Take 2.  3-25 min poses.

Still learning how to draw, so this is gonna take a while before I post something good.  Was an interesting day at Glenn Vilppu’s class on Tuesday: a model with expressive poses and me completely tanking on that session.  Haha.  That’s how the learning process works, you can’t be good when you want to be.  Just a very inconsistent drawing session.  However, I did take some lessons from it.

As awesome as ebony pencils are, I learned that they’re the worst thing I can use for figure drawing.  I’m naturally heavy handed when I draw, so until I get better control in my line, the ebony pencil will be riding the bench.  Glenn did a demo on using graphite, sanguine pencil and a drawing stump: note quite what I’m used to seeing from his videos but it’s cool nonetheless.  It’s an interesting process and some of the stuff I drew following that process turned out fairly ok.

I’m still not grasping the idea of flowing from one form to the next, but maybe I will after a few weeks.
