hey, it looks cartoony!!!

So I’ve been playing around with Flash in order to take some of my sketches to completion. I learned how to digitally ink in Flash while I was interning at Titmouse Inc. And for about a day, I also learned some coloring tricks also. I figured since I was doing all that stuff in Flash for 3 months, I owed it to myself to use that knowledge for my own art.

Besides, I haven’t done any renders that were in the 2d style. So why not give it a shot? I think I was able to make it not look so like it was done in Flash was due to the fact my colors are based off of the Copic color palette. I found a custom swatch of it for Photoshop and just painstakingly created a flash version of it for my own use.

Anyways, I think it’s a process I’m going to utilize more because it’s fairly quick and to-the-point for me. So let me know what you guys think. Cheers!

day 27: space cadet v3

2010_day27-copy

again with the space cadets.  this time around, I played with a more elongated type of character as well as more options for costume and props.  one thing i do like about the character is the pose.  homeboy looks like he’s ready for some action and is real pissy about something.  back to the drawing board, to play around with different design styles.  cheers

day 26: space cadet v2

another pass at a space cadet design.  tried to explore more options with the costume, proportions, etc.  Hell, I even designed another raygun.  Don’t know if I’m there yet with the design, so it’s back to the drawing board.

day 25: space cadet

I don’t draw sci-fi all too much, so I thought that now’s a good time to start.  Definitely some things I need to change about the drawing.  I think it’s because I’m not too fond of the pose.  But hey, it’s a first pass so hopefully the other versions come out 10x better.

day 24: Poseidon

2010_day24

How do you design Greek Gods without rehashing what’s been done before?  Hell, that’s the plight of every character designer out there.  The great thing about the idea being done before is that you have that reference.  I looked at all the versions done before and had in mind what I didn’t want to do/copy.  The tricky part is trying to think of something new.

I decided to approach the Poseidon design by placing him in modern times.  As much as togas were the norm back then, it wasn’t gonna cut it with what I had in mind.  So I played around with trying to make it modern and still godly in a sense.  So here’s what I came up with.  Hopefully, it looks moderately cool.
