The Late Shift

oonacolors

So tonight is going to be a very long night because I’m gonna have to do 2 more of these types of paintings for my creature design class tomorrow.  It’s what I get for slacking off the past few weeks.  Hooray….  Anyways, I’m not good at backgrounds or painting in general, so please bear with the joys of learning.  Let me know what you guys think.  Cheers.

Night on the Draw

So I spent the night again, just doing some rough renders of some characters I’ve been working on.  The dragon-like creature is actually from way back from my January sketch challenge and I just decided to do some rough colors last night.  I think I’m gonna play with the colors some more so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Anyways, the fairy is actually a re-envisioning of Oona from Legend for my creature design class.  It’s really easy to fall behind in that class because of the workload, but it’s super fun.  I still have to decide on which colors to use for her, so that might take some thinking.  I might just cop out and use the color scheme from my reference images.  But back to the design: I dont know of a geisha fairy has been done before since I never design fairies, but I thought it would be fun to incorporate that into the costume.  The proportions are still a little too cartoony for my teacher’s taste, so I’ll probably get some flack for that.  So I might have to redraw it.

Anyways, lemme know what you think.  Cheers.

Some Rasslin’

wrestler_conceptswebI was chatting it up with my cousin the other day and we started talking about pro wrestling.  We’re both diehard WWE fans and have been since we we kids.  But anyways, my love for pro wrestling would need it’s own blog post.  From our discussion, I got motivated to design some concepts for a pro wrestling comic that I’ve had floating in my head for a few years.

These designs I came up with were basically concepts for the main character.  I was putting my own twist on the masked luchador and japanese wrestlers and it’s been fun designing the look of the character.  The character isn’t fully there yet, so I plan on experimenting more with the costume and such.  So for the 2-3 people that read this thing, lemme know what you think.  Until next time.  cheers.

the late night draw and a quick case of the updates

I haven’t been posting much recently, so I thought I’d give a little synopsis of what I’ve been up to:

  • Taking creature design & vehicle design classes at the Concept Design Academy
  • Trying to add more drawing styles to my design bank
  • Churning away at my character design portfolio
  • Working on storyboards for an animated short that I want to produce.
  • Trying to finish up at SMC
  • Getting sick
  • Not sleeping much
  • Celebrated my birthday

That’s what’s been occupying a lot of my time as of late.  But back to the drawings.

Since this week is spring break for Santa Monica College, I’ve been finding myself in some late night drawing sessions. Something about the late hour gets me flowing creatively. I think it comes from my days at UCI when I was up editing video and trying to finish some painting assignments before class. But anyways, the 2 drawings are revised designs from a while ago. They were pretty much warm up drawings before I went and worked on some new stuff.

I’m still trying force myself to draw around the forms more and I think the results are showing to an extent.  It reminds me of something I heard Jerad, my creature design teacher, say after class: “being a great artist means fixing all your bad habits.”  It’s something that I still need to work on, but I’m slowly getting there.  So anyways, until then.

Hopefully some of my habits will be fixed by then.  Cheers

Animation Group Project

So my buddy Pansuang posted an animation project that he, our buddy Thandon, and I worked on for our 3d Animation class for the Fall 2008 Semester. It was one of the last animation assignments I worked on before deciding to dedicate all my time and effort to becoming a character designer (for those who care, the section I animated was  0:05 – 0:12).  The premise was that we had to do a 21 second animation in the confines of an elevator.  Considering the fact we only had 4 class sessions to meet and work on the project on top of the other classes we had, I think we did an admirable job.

I think we should have added some music to it, but we decided to incorporate sound at the last minute.  There are also some things that I would like to change on my parts of the animation.   It would be cool to redo the project incorporating original characters instead of using the Andy Rig.  Anyways, I hope you guys enjoy it.  So leave a message and lemme know what you think.  Cheers.
