Sketching inbetween classes

superman_fanweb5

With only 4 weeks left in the semester at SMC, I’ve been trying to make it a habit to get some sketching done  between classes.  It gives me a false sense of accomplishment with my art.  All kidding aside, I’ve been using the free time before class to experiment with drawing styles and work on some things that are missing from my portfolio.

I’ve been making an attempt to stray away from fanart, but this is kinda of a cheat.  I’m always intrigued by girls that have a geeky side to them.  Without quirks, people are just plain boring.  Anyways, I thought it would be cool to design a fangirl.  So let me know what you guys think.  cheers.

mini sketchbook…big dump!

So I recently bought myself a pocket-sized sketchbook for more on-the-go doodles. I thought it would be a nice way to sketch without really worrying about detail and focus more on free form sketching. Anyways, here are some excerpts from the past 2 days.  It’s been relaxing to draw in such a small sketchbook since the pages are so small.

Since the pages are so small, I don’t worry so much about producing a good drawing.  It’s because the artist in me that gets self-conscious about having bad pages in normal-sized sketchbooks: bigger pages amplify my bad drawings.  When I draw on smaller sheets, I don’t feel bad about sketches that don’t work because not much time was invested in the doodle.

Drawing on a smaller sketchbook allows my mind to fly autopilot and just see where the lines will take me.

Video Portfolio

I decided to put my current portfolio on a video format for the sole purpose of not having hold up my book and show my stuff while looking at people being unimpressed with my work. In a video format, I can bury my head down and sulk without having to see their initial reactions to my designs.

But all kidding aside, I guess it’s a lot easier to show your work to a group of people with on a screen as opposed to passing around my book. So yeah, watch it and let me know what you guys think.

On a sidenote:

For those who were wondering, I am still working on this creature I posted a while back on the blog. And with the current changes I made to the anatomy, I noticed that there is still more I need to work on with the lighting. Anyways, that’s all i have to say about that.

Here’s the old version:

Throwing a change-up

sci_fi-pinup_webedit

In an attempt to step out of my comfort zone of animation design, I decided to explore the pinup art of Alberto Vargas and Gil Elvgren.  However, I wanted to design a retro sci-fi pinup and deviated from my intended study.  And if you’re wondering: yes, J Scott Campbell and Dean Yeagle have a strong influence in the way I design female characters.  I can only aspire to come close to their level of draftsmanship.

Anyways, I still have a long ways to go in regards to digital painting but I like how she turned out.  And maybe I’ll finally render out an image without the linework showing through.  Who knows?  Let me know what you guys think.  Cheers.

stuff to do in class other than schoolwork

stitchy_webDecided to render a sketch on doodle I drew up in class while I was sitting in class.  I don’t know if i phrased that properly but whatever.  I’m half zombie right now.  cheers.
