So I was working on collage pages of my designs for my visual development class at SMC and decided it would be a good idea to post it on the blog. A lot of it is quick sketches and doodles while trying to find the look and feel of the characters for my story. At first I was designing generic tweety type birds because I hadn’t decided on which bird to base my story on.
So after looking through some bird field guide books, I thought the bluejay was the suitable candidate since I could play around with the hair/crown. Once I thought I had the characters decided, I tried quick renders, but I still went back to the drawing board to work out the design some more until I found something that I graviated towards.
From the results of my illustrator studies from earliers posts, I think I’m getting there. Hopefully, I’ll post a illustrator render of the adult bird. Until then, cheers.

Well, she’s more purple than blue but whatever. As you can tell, she’s another character from my story for my Vis Dev class. Like the previous bluejay, I decided to use illustrator for my finish but I should have checked if my drawing was solid. I spent more time adjusting things trying to make the structure work and it’s still not right. I like to think that I’m getting more comortable working in illustrator, but I wish there was a way to flip the drawing in that program. I think i spent more time exporting to photoshop just to flip the image to see what parts I goofed on. So the lesson of this story is to make sure your drawing is solid before going for the polish and rendering. But i’m sure you guys already know that.

I haven’t posted in a while since I’ve been swamped with school lately. Anyhow, here’s some character work in illustrator. He’s a a character from a story I came up with for my Visual Development class at Santa Monica College. I thought my current portfolio could use a bit more Illustrator pieces. So what better time than now, right? Anyways, I’ll post a more indepth update about school and the current ongoings in my growth as an artist. But hopefully, this will tide down the 3 or 4 people that read this thing. cheers.
