day 19: inspector gnomes
Here’s a warm up sketch I did to start the day. I was playing with the idea of combining Dr. Watson and Sherlock Holmes into one character as a starting point. And out came this guy. There are a lot of tweaks that I feel I need to make on the design to make it work. But I know there is something about the design that makes him interesting, so there is some type of success in the drawing. I went over the drawing with a tombow brush pen since i needed more practice with an inked line. and that’s that. until tomorrow.
day 18: Space Nerd to the Rescue

Here’s another attempt at drawing superkids. I added a little twist to it and made the heroine look a bit nerdy. It’s something worth exploring since most heroes are spawned off of nerds: ie peter parker, clark kent, etc. but when they’re in their hero persona, the nerdy exterior is gone. So I thought to myself, why haven’t they made a hero that was geeky down to the costume. I doubt I achieved it with the glasses and the pigtails, but it’s a start.
day 17: working with Illustrator

Today I spent the day trying to render a character in Adobe Illustrator. I thought it would be a good skillset to have since I see that some smaller studios require it from character designers while I was on the job boards online. Besides, I really do need some “finished” pieces in my portfolio. Doing clean up in illustrator has it’s pluses since I always mess up when I try to ink my drawings with a brush pen. Hopefully, with more practice, I’ll be able to produce some cool stuff on Illustrator like I’ve been seeing from some other artists online. Anyways, til tomorrow.
